Proposed Initiative: Cuidémonos

Problem statement/statement of need: The problem I’m trying to prevent, is the deaths of more people caused by the duration of the appointments in the public hospitals in Costa Rica. As stated by an article titled “Lista de Espera en la CCSS” by LaNación, the waiting list is getting longer every day. There are people that need to wait more than 3 years to get an appointment to get a surgery.

In this case, I will not target the surgical area. However, there is a 10,8% of the population with diabetes, meaning they are under the risk of getting a heart disease. The need of being checked by a doctor monthly is crucial for those with diabetes. Having a large number of people checked by doing an electrocardiogram, can save the life of a person.

Goals: The goal of this project is to provide 350+ electrocardiograms for free for those adults with diabetes. Accelerating their process in the waiting list.

Measurable objectives: The only measurable objectives I can get from this campaign, is the amount of people that will show up the day of the event, and how many of those people were revised by any of the 4 doctors that will be donating their time to support this project.

Plan of action: My plan is to contact 350 adults with diabetes in the zone of Potrero, Brasilito, Huacas, and Matapalo. They will be given a number and an identification card they must use the day of the event. Those people will be revised by the doctors and if there is a patient that needs treatment immediately, the EBAIS, is supporting this project to receive any patient that needs any other medical help. This will be happening on May 23 and 24, from 8-12 and 12- 5.

Impact on the problem: On the day of the event, if there is anyone found with any medical problem, that will be the moment I can say that the campaign accomplished its goal. As stated previously, its goal is to prevent people from major heart issues, or other types of medical issues. The project will impact that person because we helped them discover something they didn’t even know they had, or prevent any major health issues. Providing a longer and better life for people.
