Beach Clean-Up

Today I went to Fano and Daniel’s beach clean-up which is part of their project. Their projects intend to raise awareness on pollution and the way it’s damaging the oceans, therefore, they decided to make a beach clean-up to help the ocean and also raise awareness. From 8:30 a.m to 10 a.m we were cleaning the beach from Patagonia all the way to after Don Brasilitos.

Although it wasn’t a long route we still managed to recollect a lot of garbage, especially in the houses that live in front of the beach. I noticed that microplastics are a huge issue and should be dealt with immediately, the number of microplastics that there were was immense. Something I found very nice was that while we were cleaning the beach, five other strangers decided to give us a hand. They collected some pieces of garbage and then gave it to us, I found gratifying that we instigated change into the lives of these people.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance: Microplastics and ocean pollution are a huge global issue, I’m proud to say that participating in this clean-up could help reduce the amount of pollution in the Brasilito community.
  • Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively: Although not many people came to the clean-up, working with others for a good cause makes things more efficient and quicker.

IB Learner Profile:

  • Caring: We were picking up trash, therefore, we were caring about Earth. We cared for our future.
  • Principled: I acted with integrity by being involved in a community event and being able to show other people that picking up after your trash is possible.
