Thoughts on Motivation and Apprasials
How does feedback in the form of formative or summative appraisals make you feel? Explain. It might be different in different circumstances.
Formative and summative appraisal are two very important things to me in my school life and I like having a combination of both. I get very frustrated when I’m not given formative feedback during the project and end up with a summative appraisal with issues I could have fixed/improved on if I was informed of them earlier. However, this is usually on a bigger project, essays, IA, etc. With smaller things like homework assignments, quizzes, etc I am fine with just summative appraisals.
When you get feedback does your self-talk sometimes get in the way of what you are hearing? Explain.
However, when I get feedback my self-talk tends to get in the way of what I’m hearing. But usually in the negative sense, instead of positive self-talk taking over negative self-talk comes in and I end up doubting myself.
Do you appreciate all types of feedback? Why or why not?
However I do appreciate all types of feedback, I’m hungry to know what I did bad to work to make it better and not make the same mistake twice. Failing quickly.
Which type of appraisal do you like the most?
My favorite type of appraisal is summative closely followed by my formative. I love knowing how the final product turns out but I think it is very important to have conversations and to receive feedback throughout the process.
Is it hard to give people honest feedback in the moment if you feel like it will hurt their feelings? How can you do it so that it is done in the correct manner?
I think it is hard to give people honest feedback at the moment, I tend to come across too negatively since I’m super hard on myself. I tend to give too critical feedback like that I would give to myself. I think it is more successful to give feedback soon after the fact given time to reflect and in a more personal way.
How does your motivation connect to the feedback that you are given?
Feedback is super important to extrinsic motivation. To me, it is the end goal of a project and it is the reward I get for working hard on it.
Is it more important to have a relationship with the person that you are giving feedback? How does that strengthen the message?
Feedback is the most powerful when it is from someone you have a relationship with, this always lets you know that it is meaningful feedback and that they are giving it to help you improve, not just to tear you down.
How does Herzberg’s theory of motivation relate to appraisals? How does it connect to your life and motivation? Do you agree or disagree with it?
Herzberg’s theory of motivation relates to appraisals since appraisals can be an extrinsic motivator. Creating movement inside a business. However, I disagree with Herberg because I don’t think all work that has a pressure attached to it means someone does it “because they have to”, they can want to do it too. For me yes I have to do school but I don’t have to try as hard as I do. I try this hard cause I want to however there is still pressure attached to it.
These are a couple of ideas and reflections I’ve had about the work this week.
