HR Week 5 Reflection_ Grace Herman

May 28th, 2020 In this reflection, I am supposed to talk about how I grew as a learner this week. Before I go into that I feel like I need to acknowledge that this has been a really hard week for me as a learner. Motivation was really hard to come by this week. Yes, the extrinsic motivation was there but intrinsic motivation was nowhere to be found. I didn't feel engaged and I struggled to find the ability to master concepts and the purpose to do so. Which according to Daniel Pink's theory is what motivation depends on. Going into Week 6 of online learning with at least 6 more weeks in front of me I'm sad, unmotivated, angry and my levels of hope are low. For these reasons engaging in this project took a little more of a push than it has in the past weeks. But when I put my head down and worked on it it turned my day around and sparked a little motivation. Today, Thursday, May 28th I had a rough morning, I was sitting in science class confused, angry, and sad about doing online school. After science I didn't want to work I wanted to take a nap but in IB we don't have time for that. So I pulled myself to my desk and started working on this project and it gave me some autonomy, purpose, and the ability to master something and true to Pink's theory it motivated me. In this time I've talked with my mentor Ms. Amy Snodgrass whose given me some ideas on how to deal with the online classroom setting. After I've planned the classes for the next 5 weeks. Starting at the end with the final product and working backward from there. I invited my friends to a zoom call and practiced putting people into breakout rooms. Then I did some research on how to write short stories and short scripts. And wow I love creative writing and I'm happy that I get to share it with younger students. This project flipped this day on its head. Daniel Pink had a point when he came up with that theory. So overall this week I've grown as a learner in a couple of ways. First off, I've learned how to motivate myself and how to push through waves of hopelessness. Secondly, I've experienced how HR motivation theories apply to real life. Lastly, I've grown as a communicator and a planner. Thanks for reading,  Grace  *Challenges were undertaken showing that new skills are learned, Plan and initiate an activity, Work collaboratively with others, Show perseverance and commitment to your project, Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively, Engage with issues of global importance
