Update: Learning Outcome Journal Entry
Learning Outcome Journal Entry
The CAS learning outcome I chose to talk about in this journal entry is "Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions". This is a prompt I haven't yet discussed in a journal entry for this project, but I think it is a very important one to bring up. Here are my answers to some of the questions related to this learning outcome:
How might my project stir an ethical debate? What about my project could be ethically debated or questioned?
This is definitely a question that I thought about when planning out the logistics of my project. When people are starting gardens (especially big ones where they need consistent output, similar to mine), they often use fertilizers and pesticides that can be unnatural and harmful to animals. This is a topic that can bring about a lot of ethical debates, especially whether it is worth it to use these kinds of products in your garden. This is why I wanted to use only natural products when maintaining my garden. I talked to the gardener I work with about this, and he helped me make a fertilizer using the excess liquid from my composter. This way I am taking care of my garden in a way that is ethical and environmentally friendly because I'm putting something to use that otherwise would've gone to waste.
Did my project, in any way, show favoritism or discrimination? Did it treat
everyone in the same way and if so, how did I make sure that it did?
I think that my project definitely treats everyone equally because I am providing the vegetables from my garden for free. That way, any person with any income level will be able to come by and take whatever vegetables or fruits that they need for their family. We're also going to be donating some of our vegetables to Nubes de Esperanza, a local group here in Potrero, so that is another way we can reach out to more people and make sure they have equal opportunities to receive the food that they need.
Did my project promote development of my character within myself or my
community?
I think that my project has definitely promoted the development of my character because I am becoming more reflective and aware of the needs of my community. I have learned how to be understanding of the conditions that people are in, which helps me to recognize the motives of my project and why I want to help the people around me.
