Human Resources Reflection

  • How does feedback in the form of formative or summative appraisals make you feel? Explain. It might be different in different circumstances.

Feedback in the form of formative appraisal makes me feel good because since it’s a constant check-up along the way, I feel like I can redeem myself if I’m doing something wrong or if I need improvement on something. On the other hand, a summative appraisal makes me feel anxious, since I don’t really know what my overall performance is until the end of the project per se. I’d rather have my teachers appraise me formatively to see what I’m doing best at and what I need to work on in order to excel academically.

  • When you get feedback does your self-talk sometimes get in the way of what you are hearing? Explain.

In my case, I try to take the feedback given to me as professionally as possible. Nonetheless, there are certain circumstances where I disagree with the person because we have different perspectives and therefore end up not listening to the feedback and just keep doing what I was doing, even though it could be wrong. I believe it’s important to take feedback professionally since it not only can improve your academic life but also your social life since behavior tendencies are reflected in the feedback given.

  • Do you appreciate all types of feedback? Why or why not?

I do appreciate all types of feedback, I believe feedback is an effective way for students to improve both academically but also emotionally and mentally. Feedback shouldn’t be associated as a bad term since nobody wants to hurt other people’s feelings just because, in fact, giving feedback intends on improving the person’s overall performance not diminishing it.

  • Which type of appraisal do you like the most? Formative, Summative, Self-appraisal, 360-degree feedback

Out of all of the appraisals, I like the formative, self-appraisal, and 360-degree appraisal the most. I like the formative appraisal since it allows me to see how I’m performing at every step of a project and helps me understand what I need to keep doing or what I need to get better on, which improves my overall productivity. Insofar as self-appraisal, I like it because I feel like it gives me an opportunity to reflect and be honest with myself and my work and also a way to be cruder of my emotions in the project. Finally, I also like the 360-degree appraisal because it helps me get a perspective of what everyone is thinking. For example, my classmates can have a different point of view of me than the teacher does and I believe it’s important to take their perspective on a subject into consideration.

  • Is it hard to give people honest feedback in the moment if you feel like it will hurt their feelings? How can you do it so that it is done in the correct manner?

I believe it can indeed be difficult to give feedback and it might hurt their feelings, especially when that person is close to you (like a friend, a classmate, or a teacher) and you’ll be seeing them every day. Nonetheless, something I like to do is to never beat around the bush, at the end of the day, honesty is key and it’s better to say things as they are rather than never get to the point, even if it hurts their feelings.

  • How does your motivation connect to the feedback that you are given?

When anyone gives me feedback, independently on whether it’s good or “bad” (since I don’t believe it’s necessarily bad feedback, it motivates me to become a better version of myself, on improving my performance. Good feedback motivates me to keep doing what I’m doing and be happy, “bad” feedback lets me a little down but I try not to focus on that but rather on how better I’ll be when I take into consideration the feedback I’m given.

  • Is it more important to have a relationship with the person that you are giving feedback? How does that strengthen the message?

I believe having a relationship with the person you are giving feedback can be stressful for both counterparts. In addition, feedback may not be as effective since that feedback might be clouded with bias. I don’t believe this strengthens the message but rather can rather damage it.

  • How does Herzberg’s theory of motivation relate to appraisals? How does it connect to your life and motivation? Do you agree or disagree with it?

Herzberg’s Theory of Motivation relates to appraisals since it relates to the motivational factors in the pyramid which allow people to reach self-actualization. This connects to my life and motivation since I do believe I need to get feedback and/or appraisals in order to perform well as a student but as a person also. I believe that getting some sort of feedback is not bad considering that nobody is perfect in this world.
