Last year I was a part of student government as the junior Vice President but it wasn’t my main CAS focus. However this year I have a larger role in student government as president and the project has shifted to be my main CAS focus.
Student government is fundamentally different this year since it’s online. I’ve been struggling to piece together what online student government means and what we can do. And I’ve concluded that our main objective is to work to make online school better for high school students and to work to provide the hope that is lacking to our student body.
I really want this student government, my student government, to be worthwhile, to do something. Year after year student government does nothing and everyone complains about it but I really don’t want to continue that cycle and I am committed to breaking the cycle. However, being online it’s going to be a bigger battle than anticipated. Engaging students is harder and we can’t even have dress down days so we will have to look outside the box.
The end of the project is logistically similar to every other year, we will organize and hold elections before exams and pass student government onto the next generation. But before we reach the end of student government we need to accomplish things. I want to set concrete goals and deadlines that we will work towards over the course of the year.
This week I am launching this year’s student government. We are having our first meeting today (Monday) during lunch. On today’s agenda, we are going over job descriptions, brainstorming ideas, setting overarching goals, and making plans to include middle school and plans for morning meetings.
I am not alone in this project. I am collaborating with my Vice President Jimena and then the other members of student government: Charlie, Rachel, Emerson, Ava, and Emily. I also have support from teachers: Miss Kerry and Mr. Kyle. And with the support of these people, we will make a difference at La Paz.

Grace
