Restoring Pearl Harbor to Abundance

Mālama Pu`uloa, Ewa Beach, Hawaii

Hui o Ho`ohonua (HOH) is a 501 (c)3 non-profit created by members of the ʻEwa community on the island of O`ahu in Hawaii`i, seeking to end the perpetuation of historical trauma to the land, water, and people in the ʻEwa region.

We are best described as a community stewardship organization and are motivated by observations of environmental neglect and pollution in Pearl Harbor (Puʻuloa), as well as the social needs of the surrounding community.

We started the Mālama Puʻuloa movement with the mission to return the area to ʻāina momona, beginning with the restoration of streams, wetlands, and historic fishponds at Kapapapuhi Point Park. Our most notable progress has been in the removal of invasive mangrove and marine debris, the restoration of native vegetation, the development of education programs and the creation of previously non-existing partnerships.

We utilize 3 major strategies:
Nā Hopena Aʻo – teaching and learning. We humbly acknowledge that we are learning and have a responsibility to share what we learn with our community.

Hana – work and that which feeds the soul. We serve our community and believe in the value of working on the `āina alongside our community members and partners.

Pilina – binding together and connected. We create and value partnerships as our goals require the work of many.
Since 2016, we have engaged nearly 4500 volunteers and are empowering and connecting groups of all ages in our community to create positive change – cultivating a strong sense of stewardship, pride and kuleana in our community.
